Nutrition Tip
Think
BEFORE you eat I know it sounds obvious – but
during this time we are often on auto pilot when it comes to food. Do the holidays REALLY have to be about
food? Will we enjoy the holidays or
time with a friends and family any less without that extra piece of pie? Think about what the holidays REALLY mean
to you – are they a religious celebration or a time to connect with people
you don’t see often or are they about food – most of which is
really available any time of the year.

Recipe
Orange Spiced Nuts
3 c.
pecan halves
1/4 c. agave nectar or ½ cup maple syrup
1/2 c. orange juice
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
Heat oven
to 275 degrees. Spread pecans on ungreased 15 x 10
inch jelly roll pan. Bake for 10 minutes. In a medium saucepan, combine agave/maple syrup, juice, salt and spices. Bring to a
boil; boil 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; stir in nuts.
Using slotted spoon, remove nuts to foil or waxed paper. Separate with fork;
let dry. Store in airtight container in cool dry place.
A great gift or addition to a
holiday spread.

How can you help?
As I
reflect on the current state of affairs I can’t help but wonder “who
will help those in need?” This
time of year we tend to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday
mayhem. Maybe this year to boot
we’re wrapped up in the doom and gloom headlines pertaining to the
economy and/or our 401K. To offset
some of this, this month instead of an article focusing on how you can help yourself
I wanted to focus on how you can help others.
There are
many people less fortunate than you – can you find a way to reach into
your heart (and your wallet) to assist?
Perhaps you can donate money or your time. Or, instead of searching for the perfect
gift for the person who has everything or is hard to buy for – why not
give the gift of helping someone else (after all it IS better to give than
receive). You could donate funds in
their name instead of buying them another sweater or tie.
Here are
some interesting and/or timely charity sites I have recently come across (and
some of my personal favorites)
www.Soldiersangles.org - helps our
overseas US
troops
www.Herosmiles.org - Allows you to donate your frequent flier
miles to send families to visit wounded soldiers
www.Secondharverst.org - a national
food bank – as you can imagine the need has increased in recent months
and donations are down
www.Peta.org - People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals
www.ASPCA.org - American Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
www.Worldvisiongifts.org - Assists you in giving gifts to people in
developing nations
www.TrickleUp.org
- Assists in arranging Microfinancing for people in
developing nations to start and/or
maintain a business
www.Tisbest.org - A gift card that allows
the recipient to specify what charity they want to donate the funds to
Any
website related to disease prevention or cure – perhaps you want to
honor someone recently ill or passed on by donating to cause that would have
prevented the plight.
Some
additional ways to donate:
www.Goodshop.com - This is an online shopping tool that
allows you to have a portion of your online purchase from many different
websites donated to charity – you choose YOUR favorite charity and then
begin shopping
www.GoodSearch.com - A search engine that every time you do a
search donates a penny to your favorite cause (you’re doing the
searches any way, why not let someone benefit?)
The
National Collation Against Domestic Violence (www.NCADV.org)
and
Phones
for Life (www.Phones4Life.org) and
Cell
Phones for Soldiers (www.cellphonesforsoldiers.org)
These
three organizations collect used cell phones to be re appropriated to a
person in need. The later also
collects phone cards for soldiers to use to call home.
Be a
secret “elf” to someone in need – perhaps a family you know
or a resident of a nursing home with no family
Some non
cash ways to you can help:
- Donating blood
- Be extra nice – using the words “please”
and “thank you” during this hectic time can go along
way to making
someone’s day more pleasant
- Have a baking party and instead of indulging yourself
– bring the baked goods to a homeless
shelter, a family
in need or the local fire station
- Volunteer your time at a local charity
- Do you know someone who will be alone for the
holidays? Why not invite them to
dinner
- If you are having a party ask everyone attending to
bring a gift for ToysforTots or another local
charity
- Organize a fund drive for someone in need or a charity
of your choice – sometimes all it takes is
prompting people
– a simple email to a group of friends or a mention in a holiday letter
can go
a long way to helping those in need.
As you
can see, there are many easy ways to donate to assist others – even
many ways that do not require cash.
The point is: what can you do to help others in need during this time
of giving?
Note: To put my money where my
mouth is – one half of all proceeds from my CD’s and Home Study Programs
sold in the month of December and January will go to a well deserving
charity.

Get
to Balance –How will you bring more balance to your life? How about a healthier, more balanced life
plan?
Are your health concerns
impeding you from living life fully? Do you want to change your relationship
with food from the inside out? Are you seeking deep seeded balance and
wellness?
I
would eagerly welcome the opportunity to work with you on a personal
level. We can work together privately
to create a customized life-long plan for you AND create the steps to
incorporate those changes into your existing routines.
Through my
counseling services I can help you create and maintain balance in your life
by using nutrition as a focus and a tool. To do this I look at your
entire lifestyle to achieve maximum health. This is accomplished
through education and private consultations where an individualized program
is developed for you. These consultations include evaluating your
current diet and overall lifestyle and then making easily implemented,
gradual changes. Additionally, you’ll receive outside information
in the form of articles, books, tapes and recipes. Also included are
additional monthly forms of education and participation -- activities like
cooking coaching, health food store shopping hints, light exercising
functions and other activities. My practice is telephone based, allowing
for maximum flexibility and ease.
There is
also an email version of my program now available.

Looking
for a speaker?
One of my
greatest joys is speaking to groups.
It is always a dynamic exchange and we all come away enriched. Would your company or group benefit from an
entertaining, motivating speaker on how to get healthier? If so, please let me know the name and
contact information of your program coordinator so that I may send them an
informational packet. I would love the
opportunity to serve your favorite group.
